Thank you for your reply and the links. One of them I have seen and did find it useful.
I believe my husbands Howland family is the line from Henry, not from Pilgrim John. I've also based it on records found online and through the local LDS library. I use Ancestry for the census, tax records, birth & death & etc where they apply. I've also found a lot of information through thier database card catalog such as the books "The Howlands in America" by William Howland 1939, "Old families of Mass." by J.H. Beers & Co 1912, and several other books including the Franklyn Howland book. Here are a few others I've used:

I do have some others that have fairly reliable information with sources, if you would like to have them.
You're right about being careful of childrens names in families, that goes for dates too, seems like a lot of children with the same names were born in the same years. Very easy to confuse.
