One of my wife's ancestors was Sarah "Sallie" Vandiver born app. 1828 in South Carolina, moved to Cherokee County, AL with her family in 1835. Her oldest child was a daughter named Missouri Jane, born about 1840. According to family legend, Sarah's husband and Missouri Jane's father was ? Howeth who was killed by Indians when MJ was a baby. Sallie then married Martin Baker and had other children.

Mr. Howeth remains a mystery. Since there shouldn't have been any hostile Indians in AL by 1840, did the young family move West and she return to Alabama to her family after his death?

Does any of this sound familiar at all?
