Hello,
I have just started researching the Howeth family – here is what I have found so far (not necessarily proven):
1. Sewell Howeth of Maryland
2. William (Wm. Robert?) Howeth; to KY?; in Grainger Co, TN by 1797; wife Mary
3. Thomas Howeth b~1797; to Alabama in 1830s; in Rusk Co, TX by 1843; to Cooke Co, TX
3. Catherine Howeth b~1800; md Andrew Bowers in Grainger Co; stayed in Grainger Co.
3. John Howeth b~1805; divorced Aquilla 1834 Hamilton Co, TN; md (2) Uretha; in Cooke Co, TX by 1870
3. James Howeth b~1812; md Elizabeth Lively in Grainger Co, stays in TN
3. (three unidentified daughters)
The story that Thomas’ son William W. Howeth was born near Knoxville is incorrect. Somehow a biography got corrupted, because the Brainerd’s Mission mentioned was in today’s Hamilton Co, very close to where census and land records support Thomas Howeth living in 1830. Thomas’ 1817 marriage in Rhea Co. makes sense, because Hamilton Co. was formed from part of Rhea in 1819.
Here I why I am interested in the Howeth family:
The 1810 census shows Mary Howeth close to my Vandegriff relatives in Grainger County, TN.
In 1832, my 4g-grandfather William Roberts applied for his Revolutionary War pension in Hamilton Co, TN (#S17054), witnessed by Gilbert Vandgriff (his brother-in-law) and John Howeth (Capt. of the District – would be Soddy-Daisy area). The 1830 census shows Thomas Howeth near John Howeth who is next to their mother Mary in Hamilton Co.
The 1840 census for Hamilton Co. lists John Howeth, Mary Lauderdale, Elizabeth James and Gilbert Vandegriff – in that order. I think Elizabeth James is Thomas Howeth’s mother-in-law, and Mary Lauderdale is Mary Howeth, remarried after 1830 and widowed by 1840. (No doubt my Roberts/Vandegriff families knew the Howeths.)
The 1840 Hamilton Co. census for District 2 in Falling Water shows my Roberts. William Roberts and Ann Vandegriff’s children are Ninion Roberts (listed as “H”), William (A.) Roberts and Jacob Roberts. David Bunch listed next to Jacob Roberts is married to Jacob’s daughter Lucy, Joseph Roberts next to David is unknown, the “C” and second Wm. Roberts are Jacob’ sons.
William A. Roberts/Robbirds married Jane Bunch (sister of David), my 3g-grandparents. Almost all my Roberts (except Ninion and family) left in 1842 for SW Missouri (primarily Texas and Christian Co.)
Thomas Howeth is in Rusk Co, TX by 1843 (tax list). The 1846 voter list for Rusk Co. (Republic of Texas) shows Thomas “Houth” and sons, David Bunch and Joseph Roberts (next to David in 1840 census?). By 1852, David Bunch is in Grayson Co, TX – Thomas Howeth (Jr) marries that year in Grayson Co. David Bunch is in Grayson Co. (until 1863 – then to Sevier Co, AR) near the Cooke Co. line where the Howeth’s seem to be.
Also floating around Texas at this time is a Suel Howeth. Legend says he moved to Texas with an uncle. I think Suel is the son of John Howeth, and I have found information showing that Elizabeth Williams’ family (Suel’s wife) went through Rusk Co. Suel Howeth and his brother-in-law Robert Williams are found in Cherokee Co, TX by 1850, where Suel married in 1846.
David Bunch and Lucy Roberts had at least two daughters in Tennessee. I’m not sure if Lucy died in Tennessee and David remarried before moving to Texas. Descendants have a story that Lucy’s daughters had a Lauderdale grandmother – is this Mary Howeth/Lauderdale? The 1860 census for David Bunch in Grayson Co. has some errors. David married neighbor Elender Kays (the widow of Meredith Blue) before February of 1858. The census shows “David Jesse Blue” (born in June of 1858?) and “Suel Blue” (born July of 1857?) – yet both always went by Bunch. I have found no connection between Kays, Blue and Howeth. Based on the marriage information, given names and birth dates, I think that David Bunch is the father of Suel and David Jesse Bunch.
There was a James and William Bunch buying land in early Hamilton Co, TN in the 1830s. I think I can account for William Bunch who ended up just across the border in Georgia (and had a daughter named Jane Bunch married to William Commodore Roberts – these Roberts not related in any way), but I can’t find anything more on James Bunch.
According to the 1810 census, William and Mary Howeth had three sons (Thomas, John and James) and four daughters (born 1794-1810). Asuming that Mary Lauderdale was Mary Howeth and related to Jane and David Bunch, then the oldest Howeth daughter might have married a Bunch (probably in Grainger Co.) leaving David and Jane as orphans. The 1830 cenus for Mary Howeth in Hamilton Co. shows a boy and girl that might be Jane and David Bunch (born 1812 and 1815) and another younger boy. Either Mary had more children (illegitimate?) or these are her grandchildren.
I think there are too many “coincidences” – David Bunch follows Thomas Howeth to Texas and has a son named Suel. My Roberts family knew the Howeths, maybe as early as 1800. The 1870 census for Cooke Co, Texas shows John Howeth (and his second family) next to his nephew William Howeth. William’s household includes a domestic servant “Malinda Buch” which might be David’s daughter who didn’t marry until 1876 and isn’t listed with David in Arkansas.
Any thoughts or info appreciated.
