Hello,
My 4g-grandparents were William Roberts and Ann Vandegriff, married 1784. They lived in Grainger Co, TN from about 1800-1809, to Anderson Co, then to Hamilton Co. in 1831 were Gilbert Vandegriff (Ann's brother) and John Howeth were witnesses to William Roberts' Revolutionary War pension application made in Hamilton Co. in 1832.
My 3g-grandparents were William A. Roberts/Robbirds and Jane Bunch married about 1833, probably in Hamilton Co. Jane's brother David Bunch married Lucy Roberts in the same era, a niece of William A. and Jane's. Cousins who are descendants of Mary Ann Bunch (d/o David Bunch and Lucy Roberts) have a family story that Mary Ann had a Lauderdale grandmother, but Lucy's mother should be Elizabeth Groves suggesting Lauderdale is from Jane and David Bunch.
In the 1810 census for Grainger Co, TN - Mary Howeth is listed near the Vandegriffs and associated families. David Bunch is a common name in Grainger Co, with several families.
In the 1830 census for Hamilton Co, TN - Mary and John Howeth are listed next to each other. There is a William And James Bunch buying land in the 1830s, no additional information.
The 1840 census for Hamilton Co, TN lists John Howet, Mary Lauderdale, Elizabeth James and Gilbert Vandigrif - in that order. There is no doubt my Roberts-Vandergriff relatives knew the Howeth and Lauderdale families.
Here is my where things get interesting - Most of my Roberts moved to SW Missouri in 1842, but David Bunch was in Texas by 1844 according to his children's birth places, and was definately in Grayson County, TX by 1852. Didn't the Howeth family go through Grayson Co? Not sure when Lucy Roberts died, but David remarried before 1858 to Ellender Kays, the widow of Meredith Blue. David's oldest daughter married Erastus Blue, Meredith's older brother. The Blue families were later in Cooke Co, TX.
I think the Lauderdale, Bunch and Howeth are somehow related. To add fuel to the fire - the 1860 census for David Bunch is wrong. It shows David Jesse Blue, which would make him David's stepson. Except, David Jesse was born after it is proven David Bunch is married to Ellender Kays (Blue), and he is otherwise always known as David Jesse Bunch. The next youngest child is Suel, who like his younger brother is listed as Blue in the 1860 census but always went by Suel Bunch. Isn't the name Sewell or Suel a traditional name of the Howeth family, and wasn't there a Suel Howeth in Texas in thi era?
Any ideas or clues appreciated as to how Howeth, Lauderdale and Bunch might connect.
Dan
