Hi Debbie and Tammy,
On December 12, 2010, Debbie Cox wrote:
...Am looking for information about Simon Ames Howe, son of sewing machine inventor Elias Howe, born February 29, 1844 in Cambridge, Mass. Married Eleanor Peck.
Specifically trying to learn of children. Appears to have one born and died in Bridgeport, CT on August 1,1866 at 0 years. Also found a marriage record for Mary Elizabeth Howe (January 22, 1902) in Manhattan, New York, New York. Parents are identified as Simon Ames Howe and Eleanor Audera Peck.
Found no birth record.
Has anyone followed this thread of Simon Ames? He's the only male direct descent that I've found of Elias Howe (sewing machine). If he had none, and Elias' second marriage did not produce one, he would be the last of the SM Elias DIRECT line...dying on September 15, 1883...
To which Tammy Burt responded:
Hi Debbie,
I have some information for you regarding Simon Howe's line. I am the great, great, great granddaughter of Elias Howe. I've always known this but am just getting into putting my family tree together. Simon Howe married Eleanor Peck and had a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Howe. She was an only child, but there may have been a sibling that died at birth. Hope this info. helps you...
Tammy
Now I will inject myself into this fray. I've been researching Elias Howe Jr ever since I learned that his first wife, Elizabeth Jennings Ames Howe, was my g, g, grandfather's sister. My g, g, grandfather's name was John Gibson Ames. The parents of both John Gibson and Elizabeth Jennings were Simon Ames and Jane Robinson. You can check out the following link to learn more re: the connection between the Ames and Howe families : Elijan Howe*
An even stronger indication of the depth of the bond between the Ames and Howe families is shown by the Cemetery Lot information that I recently obtained from the Cambridge Cemetery in Cambridge, MA (see attached). Clearly the two families were very close, given that they shared the same family plot, which is highly unusual.
In the attached document that I obtained from the Cambridge Cemetery, you can see that Elias's first wife is buried next to her parents (Simon and Jane) on the one side and that she was formerly buried next to Elias Howe Jr on the other side, along with Elias's parents (Polly and Elias Sr).
What you see now, however, is an empty rectangle next to Elizabeth. What happened here is that in 1890 the 2nd wife of Elias, i.e., Rose Halladay (with whom he had no children), had his remains transferred to the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY (where I live) so that she would be buried next to him -- FTR, I have lots of photos of this lot.
Anyhow, back to Simon A. Howe. You can see in the attachment that Simon A. Howe is buried next to his wife Eleanor and his infant son who died on August 1, 1866 at less than 1 day or age.
I always wondered if Simon and Eleanor had another child and so I'm happy to learn that indeed they did and that her name is Mary Elizabeth Howe! I also know that Elias's two daughters married two Stockwell brothers but I have no further information on them at this time.
If this email reaches either one or both of you, please feel free to response and we can take our shared interest in the Howe family from there.
