A Discovery - Candor NY Houghtalings
Hi Folks and Happy New Year. I just came back from a little trip to Candor NY to look for Houghtalings buried there.I have been reading about the Michigan Houghtaling's and the 'missing John 'Houghtaling. I believe I have found him. But there is an interesting twist to this and Im not sure people know about this. This may open a genealogical can of worms ! There is a John and Hannah buried in Candor. But the last name isnt Houghtaling.... its Huftailing ! very interesting because there were and still are Huftailings living in the Delaware Co. area of Meredith / Meredale. Houghtaling Hollow in Meredith . The spelling though may be different ( Hufftailing ? etc ) Houghtaling Hollow Rd has Houghtaling Hollow cemetrery on it that ive been restoring now for 3 years. My GGGG grandfather Johannes Houghtaling ( 1763 - 1844 )built a mill there and his son James is my GGG grandfather. The Hollow has been called Huftalin ( sp* )Hollow which is not the correct case. So this may be a confusing name change ( again ).. Perhaps the Houghtalings of Michigan had thier name changed? Huf and Hough can be pronounced the same.Mine was Houghtaling until 1900 then became Hotaling
The John Huftailing buried in Candor was born in 1811 and died on Dec 10 1891 at 80 yrs of age. He also served in the Civil War Co. C 86 NYV. His wife Hannah D Huftailing , i think, is Hannah D Best( b. Aug 1839 d. June 1887 ).There are a few Best's buried there also. This will be interesting to hear about in the future. I did take some pictures so maybe i can post them here or send them.Well let me know how this turns out and I hope this was helpful.
