Names were often spelled how they sounded to the person writing them down.A Hough's name could easily be spelled Huff in a record made by a minister.I have seen two records in a Connecticut Church of a baptism and a burial of twins made by the same minister on the same day where the baptism is spelled Hough and the burial spelled Huff. The discovery that the same groom was spelled Hough by the town clerk and Hoofe by the minister (transcribed Hoose in published records) led to identification of a whole line of descendants of William Hough of Connecticut.
