It is generally accepted that William's father was Edward Hough of Chester, Cheshire. There is not nor has there ever been, according to Chester authorities, a plase in Cheshire called West Chester or Westchester. The "Westchester" as well as the name of William's father, Edward, comes from Samuel Hough's family record in the land records of Saybrook.Samuel was William and Sarah's oldest son, and the Westchester probably comes from his father's recollection that Chester is in the western part of Cheshire. The name of William's mother is not known. Many internet genealogies have her first name as "Ann."That is due to a death record in the records of Gloucester, MA, but it makes little sense that William's mother, if she immigrated to America, would have stayed in Gloucester rather than moved with her son and his family to New London in abt. 1651.There is no record that Edward or his wife ever immigrated. While Edward's parantage has not, to my knowledge, been documented, it is clear from recent DNA evidence that the New London Hough family is closely realted to other Hough familes of Cheshire origin.
