Hi
My name is Tim Hauck and I have been doing genealogical research on the Hauck family for over 35 years. My family talked about this "Crusader" for many years. When I got to Germany, I went to the State Archives in Ludwigshafen and talked with an archivist there about this person. The bottom line is he is a myth.He never existed. There are two lines of evidence to support this. One is the name itself. In the 11the century very few people, except the VERY famous would have had a last name like von or even a last name at all.Second there is a book or rather a text which dates back to that time which lists the nobles of the time who took part in tourniers(sp?) or what we called tournaments. If this person was a noble and especially a crusader, he should have been listed. He wasn't.
Another line of evidence is the coat of arms that this person alledgedly recieved from his holiness Pope Urban II.According to the archivist and other people who deal in heraldic coats of arms, the one represented in Teyerbands is far to ornate for the time. Also the Catholic church has no coat of arms on record in the archives in Rome.
The archivist speculated that this myth was created by a minor noble who existed in the 14th/15th century named Hauckhe.According to the archivist, it was common practice back then for nobles to "invent" a line of heraldry that dated back to the Crusades in order to improve their social standing. This tactic was also done by high ranking Nazi's during their time.
According to the German registry of heraldry at the University of Heidelberg, this coat of arms is not listed to any particular family or noble line.
As a joke, my now wife had a copy made before we got married and it now hangs in our family room. Its very nice, but not real.Another piece of information you may not know that there is a motto which goes with the coat of arms.It may be old German, but some words do not appear in any dictionary I can find. The motto is "Ich treu or trew mein stern."The best translation I have gotten is "I am true to my star"Which I interpret to mean I follow my destiny or my family.
Sorry to disappoint you on this.
