Hottel-Markley-Wolverton
The 1850 census of Shenandoah County, Virginia, p. 2, lists a Rosanna Barton, 30, with whom is living a Phoebe Wolverton, 20, and the family of a David Wolverton, 26.Phoebe Wolverton and David Wolverton were sister and brother, children of John William Wolverton, b. 1787.John William had a sister named Rosanna.I believe that Rosanna Barton was a first cousin, daughter of their aunt Rosanna Wolverton and ______ Barton. It is interesting that a John Barton had been bondsman when David and Phoebe Wolverton's parents married in 1821.I suspect that he was the man whom Rosanna Wolverton married, so brother-in-law of David and Phoebe Wolverton's father.
The problem with this is that standard Hottel genealogy, History of the Descendants of John Hottel, p. 459, says that Rosanna Wolverton married one Henry Hottel.More precisely, it says that Henry Hottel, b. 1801, married MRS. ROSANNA MARKLEY, nee Wolverton. It gives no date of marriage, but the first child was born in 1828.I think that it was wrong.RosannaWolverton would have been twelve years older than Henry Hottel, 38-39 when that first child was born, almost 50 when the last child was born in 1837.I take it that Henry Hottel did marry a woman named Rosanna, but I do not think that she was Rosanna Wolverton.
Can anyone cast any light on this?Did Henry Hottel in fact marry a Rosanna Markley?Do the censuses give her age?Is there any reason to believe that she ws born Rosanna Wolverton and not Rosanna Somethingelse?
