Hott Family Genealogy Forum

There was a book written and published in VA years ago. The book is about the Hott family history (many deceased relatives of mine are there and ends with me). There were different versions of the name which were taken on by some as they entered in the United States. One which I remember was Holt. Many of the Hott family were originally Shamholtzer who changed their name on entering the United States. Notice the Holt in the middle. Several times the Shamholtzers and Hotts married together but Shamholtzers are also Hotts. So it is easy to trace your family line back through different people and still end up in the same spot. I went back by the name Hott for example and found a family. When I went back by the Shamholtzer name I found the same family. This happened more than once. Another person I met online back in June had the same experience. Both names came from Germany before here. I always thought I was of German decent. Literally speaking yes but not bloodwise. Before Germany they were from France. They migrated to Germany to escape Religious war. This was because certain families in France didn't agree with the Religious ideas of the Catholics. They were given the name "Huguenots" (pronounced hew ga not). You can read about the History of the Huguenots here> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huguenot#Criticisms_of_Roman_Catholic_Church. Pay close attention in the sections North America and Germany.
