So, I looked him up in the 1930 census. There are two Earl Hosmers born within a year of each other running around in New England:

Earl S Hosmer, Julia A, East Greenbush, Rensselaer, NY abt 1891 New York Head
The one I found in RWWC (above) isn't yours.
In 1920, yours is in NY:

Rensselaer County seems to be home base for this branch of the Hosmer family. It isn't proof positive that this Earl S. is your Earl S., but it is starting to look like he might be.
Can't find him reliably in 1880 or 1870.
