Keith: Start with birth and death certificates and marriage licenses for those you know. Record interviews with your older relatives, now, Information about their life that is not recorded during their lifetime, unlike money, goes with them to the grave. Have them put names on the old nameless family photographs so descendants will know them. Go on the internet like you just did and search the names. Other descendants may have already published a family tree containing their names

I checked 2 large Hosmer Genealogies by Ronald L. Roberts (3 Volumes) and i Volume by Mary F VAnce-Shaw. Neither one had a record of your father or grandfather. However many people do not respond to inquiries from authors, so they do not appear in the genealogies.
Happy hunting,
Malcolm Osmer (Hosmer until 1822)
