a HORNSBY whose family settled from Lincolnshire, Eng.,c1850 to Steuben County 200 miles up from New York by the Chemung River near to the Ontario border -- posts that the Senecas Indian Tribes referred to the area as the "horn in the water."The Indian pronunciation/spelling is Cononque -- pronouned Horn on qwa.... que/qua as in aqua: water.In Cumbria there is Hornsby Gate: two medium high "horns"/hills divided by an ancient winding dried river route/valley, nr the head of the River Eden, an area heavy in the Hornsby name since at least 800AD when the Nords came in supplementing the Anglo Saxon tribes with their similar poetic language descriptions.Same latitude, too ....
