Thomas Horne, b. Dec 3, 1896, son of Kate Horne, Surrey, London or Kent?
I am hoping for a possible lead as I search for a Thomas Horne, son of Kate Horne with a Brazier famliy connection A very good friend of mine is searching for her grandfather's family, her mother was a Horne. I have been helping her in her search but I do not know much about researching in England. His name was Thomas E. Horne and he was a British Home Child brought to Canada in 1904 at the age of 7 by the Catholic Emigration Association and he had a connection to a Brazier family in Folkestone, Kent. We seem to be having a hard time trying to track him down. The only really precise clue we have that may get us somewhere is that in his military records (he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in 1915, Regiment #444162) it mentions as next of kin, his mother Kate Horne of London, England (no precise address) and his aunt, a Mrs. J. Brazier of 20 Station Road, Moorhall, Folkestone, Kent, England. This address would for sure be correct from 1915 to probably 1918 or maybe even longer. There seems to be evidence he may have visited this aunt on occasions when he had leave when stationed in England when he was in the Folkestone area. Also he was signing over some of his pay to her. They must have been quite close or maybe his aunt, Mrs. J. Brazier and her husband were looking out for his mother for some reason.
My friend said she once saw a copy of his birth certificate but it was quite a while ago and her aunt (one of Thomas' daughters) cannot remember where she put it. On his birth certificate it says his mother's name was Kate Horne but it said father unknown. He came to Canada on the ship Bavarian which left Liverpool the 28th of July 1904 and arrived at Montreal Quebec, Canada on the 4th of August 1904. He ended up with a family in Jeffery's Corner, Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada by the name of Donovan. According to the 1911 Canada census they adopted him and in his service record it also lists Jerry (Jeremiah) Donovan as his foster father.
He was single when he joined the Canadian army in 1915 and gives his birth place as London, England (parish, country). He married Anastasia McNaught the 16th of June 1923 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Sussex, Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada and lists his birth place as Surrey, England and parents as Thomas Horne and Mary Ingram. Some of his children's marriage certificates give his birth place as Surrey others as London.
My friend was only about 3 years old when he died in 1952, so she knows next to nothing about his family from England Her grandmother told her he didn't talk much about his family but he always carried a photo around with him. It could have been his mother, his sister or maybe his aunt, we don't know. She is quite sure he had a sister because her grandmother and aunt mentioned this to her. Her grandmother is deceased as well. My friend thinks he possibly used his grandparents names or some other relatives on his marriage certificate so no one would know his mother may have had him out of wedlock. She is positive his mother was Kate Horne and was probably not married when she had Thomas.
My friend is getting discouraged because we keep hitting "brick walls" but I being a genealogy buff having been working on my own family tree since 1976 do not give up easily. Possibly someone may know where we can look or perhaps can connect us with someone researching Horne this Horne family or any Horne family connected with a Brazier family who lived in Moorhall, Folkestone, Kent during WWI.
Here's hoping someone can shed even a small glimmer of light on the puzzle.
