Raymond Hewitt Horne passed away in Moose Jaw on October 31 after a long illness. Raymond was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan on September 4, 1915. He is survived by his wife Zelma (Lazurca), whom he married in 1951, and son Gerald, of Burnaby, British Columbia. He is also survived by several cousins in England and Australia, and one niece (Gabrielle Hill) in England. Raymond was predeceased by mother Nellie Gertrude in 1940, brother Sydney in 1947, sister Nona (Stedmond) in 1969, and father Ernest in 1971. Ray grew up in Moose Jaw and Winnipeg. He enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1941 and spent the next five and half years as a fireman and Station Fire Chief at various R.A.F. training stations across Canada. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Sergeant from the Eastern Air Command. After discharge Ray was employed by the Provincial Fire Commissioner as a Fire Fighting Instructor. In 1956 he became the Fire Chief of the Swift Current Fire Department where, under his command, the department won many provincial and national awards in the field of fire fighting and training. After his retirement from the department he became the Emergency Measures Organization Director for the Swift Current district and opened a business in the safety and fire equipment field. On retirement from business Ray and Zelma moved to Moose Jaw. Ray's hobbies included computers, photography, the restoration of antique cars, and fishing. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the World Wildlife Fund, 245 Eglinton Ave. East, Suite 410, Toronto, ON, M4P 3J1 (www.wwf.ca), would be appreciated by the family.
