My line of Horn's came over from Germany and landed in MD as well. (Washington County) My 5th Great Grandfather was actually born in MD in 1768 and eventually moved to Pikeville, TN. During the Civil War the family was torn apart and half moved to Stone County MO. Some went even more South down to the GA and TN line. It wasn't until the late 1800's that we started to see their ken start to put an "e" on the end of their name. From what I have been able to gather- it was put there on several of the Horn's (especially in AR) due to the Census taker misspelling their names and when the cousins learned to write their last names they would take it right off of the Census. I'm not sure I would have too much integrity in the North/South story you were told.
