Who were the parents of John Hord 1664-1747 of "Shady Grove"
Has anyone been able to pin point with any certainty the parents of John Hord 1664-1747 of “Shady Grove”?
In Rev. A. H. Hord’s book “Genealogy of the Hord Family” (1898) pg. 25 he states that “Baptized, Jan. 19th, 1664, John Hoord, son of Edmund Hord.John, born Dec. 29th.He came to Virginia, 1685, and was the ancestor of the Hords of America.”He did not indicate who Edmund’s parents were (or I missed it).
In his publication “English Ancestry of the Hord Family of Virginia, with Supplementary Data” (1940) he gives the following line. The copy that I have is difficult to read but I have done my best to transcribe the line as follows:
*ALAN HORD – “Cote House”, Oxfordshire, England, died 1555.Son of John Hord, Thomas (Attorney General of England at the time of Henry VII), Richard, Thomas, Richard, Richard, John, Richard 1275 A. D. believed to have been a descendant of Henry de Hord 1215 A. D. (“Topographer and Genealogist” Vol. 1, pp. 33, 34, 36).
Son *ALAN HORD (“Cote House” died 1606) married Barbara Blount, daughter of Walter Blount, sister of Sir Thomas Blount of an ancient English family through whom is derived descent from the Ayala and Sanchet families, two of the most illustrious houses of Castile, Spain.
Son Sir *THOMAS HORD, Knight, married Frances Gardiner, daughter of Sir Thomas Gardiner of Peckham, Surrey.
Children:
Thomas (eldest son) “Cote House” will proved April 24, 1716, married Barbara Trinder, second cousin of Launcelot Bathurst of Virginia. She was d/o Charles Trinder and Jane Heylin.
Alan Hord (second son) was probably the Alan Hord who came to Virginia 1650 as headright in the patent of Colonel Moore Fauntleroy……
*JOHN HORD (third son) – “his father bequeathed to him in his will proved May 6, 1662, lands in Oxfordshire and Warrickshire “to him and his heirs male the fact (1) that members of his immediate family were directly connected with Virginia (2) that the name of the father of “JOHN HORD, Junior” of Virginia is known to have been John Hord (3) that he is the only Joohn Hord in the English pedigree (“Topographer and Genealogist” Vol 1, pg 36) who could have been the father of JOHN HORD of Virginia (4) that an eminent genealogist in England was said “it is practically certain” that the Hords of Virginia were descendants of Alan Hord of Cote – appears to identify him as the John Hord, Senior, who was father of “JOHN HORD, Junior” of Essex County, Virginia.”
William Hord (fourth son) by his father’s will proved May 6, 1662 bequeathed lands.
Hastings Hord (fifth son) a minor 1658; married 1677/78.
Children of above John Hord:
JOHN HORD, Junior, of Essex County, Gentleman - (Deed Book 1-A, page 227 of King George County, Virginia) in William Armstrong Cozier's "General Armory" page 74 (1904), containing the names of American families entitled to Bear Arms, appears the name of John Hord of Shady Grove, Essex county, Virginia, and his arms described are those of the Hord family of "Cote House", Oxfordshire. He was in Virginia 1708; owned 1000 acres in King George County and the estates of "Shady Grove" and "Liberty Hill" in Essex County. Will proved in Essex County, Virginia, November 21, 1749.
Robert Hord – mentioned as nephew in the will of Thomas Hord of “Cote House”.He is believed to have been a son of John Hord, brother of Thomas. He as Lieutenant of Regiment of Foot and died at Port Manon (sp.), Monorca (sp.), 1723.He had a son, Thomas.
Alan Hord – mentioned as “brother” of Robert Hord and guardian of Robert’s son, Thomas Hord, “a minor” in 1723 (Prerogative Court of Canterbury).
Child of JOHN HORD, Junior:
Thomas Hord of the Parish of St. Ann in the County of Essex and Colony of Virginia, Gentleman (Deed Book 1735-1738, page 253 of Essex County) Eldest son, “proved his importation into the Colony”, born September 7, 1701; will proved in King George County, Virginia, September 4 1766, married Jane, dau. of Simon Miller, gr. daughter of Simon Miller, Captain Bacon’s Rebellion, 1676 (other children).
