G'day Lewis, This obituary from the Orangeville Sun concerns my great great grandfather William Horan 1795-1897. He actually emigrated to Canada in 1823 with his family, the paper had that part wrong. His father Michael died shortly after leaving the ship. His mother carried on with the rest of the family from Quebec up to York, (now Toronto). After petitioning for land they settled in Albion Township which was then part of York County, later part of Peel County, Ontario. While most of his siblings moved on to Grey county, William married a local girl, Honora Shore and stayed in Albion. They had 16 children,14 of whom were living when William died in 1897. Article in the Orangeville Sun May 27, 1897 Centenarian Dead Mr William Horan, the oldest citizen of Albion died on Saturday last and was buried on the following Monday. Mr Horan was born in Kings county, Ireland in the year 1795, being 102 years old at the time of his death. The deceased came to Canada in 1847 and and has been a respected resident of Albion township as far back as the oldest inhabitant can remember. He leaves a family of six daughters and eight sons; six of the latter acted as pallbearers. The funeral was very largely attended, the services being performed by the pastor of his church. Few have lived so long and seen as little trouble. He was always in fair circumstances and his family relations were of the happiest kind. Peace to his ashes!
