Interesting similarities, Maureen. I am still unable to confirm birthdates and places for either Alfred Or Mary Hopper, other than their oldest children knew they were from England. We do believe that Mary I(E)mpey Hopper was a British Home Child brought from England with 3 siblings in 1890.If you have any suspicions that your grandmother may have been a BHC, you might want to check

which will give you links to the Rootsweb British Home Children Mailing list, a very helpful list, some people being able to find their ancestors were brought to Canada from England, Scotland & Ireland, eventually moving into the US.Our Mary Hopper had always said she came as a servant from England, but the classic BHC never spoke much of their unusual entries into Canada, due to shame or ill-treatment in homes in which they were placed to work until they became of age.
It will also be helpful for you to search the Canadian National Archives Homechildren database at
http://www.archives.ca/02/020110_e.htmlhttp://www.archives.ca/02/020110_e.html for your grandmother's name.Remember to try different spellings.
Hope some of these will lead to some clues for you.
