hope / vere (weir)
Charles Hope married, in 1733, Catherine Weir, only daughter & heiress of Sir William Weir of Blackwood, Scotland. Catherine died in 1743. Charles took his wife's family name Charles Hope Vere, all things being very French at the time.Charles died Dec 1791 aged 71. On his death he left Craigiehall to his eldest son William Hope Vere (1st Dragoon Guards) He lived in Craigiehall for 20years, dying aged 75 in 1811. He was succeeded by his eldest son James Joseph Hope Vere who married Lady Elizabeth Hay, daughter of George, 7th Marquess of Tweedle. He died aged 58 in 1843 and was succeeded by his eldest son William Edward Hope (Grenadier Guards & Royal Company of Archers) He married Lady Emily Boyle in 1857.
His younger brother Charles Edward Hope Vere had a pipers tune composed in his name "Charles Edward Hope de Vere" Charle smarried in 1866 Julia, daughter of Major General John Craigie Halkett of Ravelrigg.
William died 1872 aged 48 and was succeeded by his only son Colonel Charles Hope Vere (Lanarkshire Yeomanry) He died in 1933 having sold Craigiehall in 1916 to Archibald Phillip, 5th Earl of Roseberry. Ending 175 years of Veres in Craigiehall.
