Jonathan Neal Hooks
Lisa,
By now you have received the message that I forwarded to you from Melody, [email protected], with the obituary of your great-grandfather.
I need to apologize to you for telling you that he died in Telfair County, and that he was a resident of Jeff Davis County. Let me explain what happened. Georgia has a Death Index/Register on microfiche, and most of the larger libraries have a copy. I have been copying the Hooks deaths to be published in the "Hooks Herald," a newsletter. In almost all years, except 1949, the county of death is spelled out. For some years, the county of residence is also spelled out. In others, the county of residence is in code, and for some years, both are in code. I had previously discovered that 1949 was different. In that year, they spelled out the county of residence and listed the county of death in code. But I didn't correct my original notes, and that is what I looked out, when I told you that your ancestor had died in Telfair County. I'm sorry. I hope I didn't cause you to send them $10 for a death certificate. And if you did, I hope they'll refund your money.
Now, let me talk about the obituary. It says that he was buried in Lumber City Baptist Church Cemetery. We previously found out that he has a tombstone in Stuckey Church Cemetery, west of Glenwood. Did they bury him in one place, then later remove him and bury him in another? I don't know.
It also says that he was the son of the late William Rainey and Alice Smith Hooks. It says that he was survived by a sister, Mrs. Maggie Kirkland, of Swainsboro, Ga., and a brother, Jesse Hooks, of Myakka City, Florida. That is mostly correct. He was the son of William Duncan Hooks, who was born in Jan., 1847, and died in 1917. His Hooks grandparents were Jonathan and Mary Ann (-?-) Hooks. His mother was Sara Smith, born in 1848, and died in 1896. His Smith grandparents were White R. and Rachael M. (Flanders) Smith. William Duncan and Sara are buried in Moore Cemetery, just outside Swainsboro.
Siblings that I know about are:
Rachel A. Hooks, born 1867, died 1868, buried in Moore Cemetery.
Ephriam White Hooks, born 1868, married Ellen J. Davidson.
Martha J. "Mattie" Hooks, born 1871, married Isaac H. Hicks, died 1927, buried in Moore Cemetery.
Nancy, born 1874.
Margaret Vienna "Maggie" Hooks, born 1877, married George W. Kirkland, died 1959, buried in Summertown (Ga.) Methodist Church Cemetery.
Jesse Hooks, born 1880 [and I didn't know what had happened to him until I saw his name in the obituary].
Twins Willie and George, born and died in 1888.
During the 1900 census, William Duncan Hooks was listed with the family of Benjamin L. Kirkland in Emanuel County, Georgia. William Duncan was identified as a servant. Benjamin was a brother of George W. Kirkland, who married Maggie Hooks. I have suspected that George's wife, Mary Elizabeth, who was called Elizabeth, born in 1870, might have been a daughter of William Duncan, but I haven't tried to find out who she was. She died in 1952. If she was a daughter, then she should have been listed as a surviving sister of your Jonathan Neal. Benjamin and Elizabeth are buried in Kirkland Cemetery, at Summertown.
