The Rejected Applications of the Guion Miller Roll of the Eastern Cherokee Microfilm and book indexes at Raleigh, NC Archives: To paraphrase somewhat from an Extract of the Roll : The Cherokee Nation filed 3 lawsuits against the U.S. Govt. for funds due them under their treaties of 1835, 1836 and 1845. Over one million dollars was awarded to the Eastern Cherokee. The Guion Miller Roll was created to distribute the funds among each Eastern Cherokee person alive on May 28, 1906. The criteria were to prove membership in the E.C. Nation at the time of the treaties or to prove being a descendant from a member. Guion Miller was the special agent who identified the eligible recipients The Guion Miller Roll is on 348 rolls of microfilm. Most rolls contain 150 applications. Out of 45,000 applications representing 90,000 individuals only 30,840 were found to be eligible. Some of the African Americans were rejected with a notation that the person was a former slave or descendant of a slave; Other applicants were rejected as "Old Settlers" (Cherokee who went west before 1835); some were identified as members of another tribe; and others failed to prove relationship to an ancestor on an earlier Cherokee roll; and some were identified as "white". ------------------------- 1.
