Hi Ernie,

I would very much enjoy having a picture of that famous or "infamous" Hooker Family Memorial near Hookerton, NC.
I do have a copy of the inscription and the inscription is incorrect. Samuel C. Hooker was NOT a son of Stephen Hooker. Samuel Hooker was a son of James and Zilpha (Spruill) Hooker. James was a brother of Stephen. Dr. Charles Holloman in his "Notes on the Hooker Family of Greene County, N.C.," dated Sept. 15, 1961, p. 10, points out that the inscription on the memorial is incorrect. But Dr. Holloman compounded the error when he said that Samuel was a son of William Hooker III, brother of Stephen and James.
Finally, in 1981, in the report he prepared for your family, on page 7, Dr. Holloman correctly pointed out that Samuel was actually the son of James.

William Hooker II died in Bertie Co., NC, after leaving the 1756 will. His son, William Hooker III, moved to Dobbs Co., NC, about 1759. Samuel Hooker, son of James and nephew of William III also moved to Dobbs Co., NC, in 1780.

There were several Nathan Hookers. I realize that you are descended from Nathan Hooker, son of William Hooker III. Kate is descended from Nathan Hooker, son of Stephen Hooker. Another Nathan was the son of John Hooker. All three Nathans were 1st cousins. They were named after their uncle, Nathan Hooker (son of William II), who moved to Burke County, Georgia.

Kyle
