On this 9 day of May AD 1818 before me the subscriber th one of the Judges of the Superior Courts of Law & courts of Equity for the state of North Carolina, personally appeared Charles Hood, a freeman of Colour, aged fifty five or fifty six years resident in Orange County in said
State, who being by me first duly sworn, doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land & Naval Service of the United States in the Revolutionary
War,” That he the said Charles enlisted in Caswell County in North Carolina in the Company commanded by Captain Thomas Donoho in the Sixth Regiment of the North Carolina Line on the Continental establishment in the year Seventeen hundred & eighty, that he continued in the
service of the United States until the Peace, when he was discharged from Service at a place near to Charlestown South Carolina by Captain Hale; that he was in the Battle of the Eutaw Springs [SC, 8 Sep 1781] & also in the Siege of Charleston [29 Mar - 12 May 1780] – but had been
marched out to Ashley Hill before the surrender of the town & was not made a prisoner of War & that he is in reduced circumstances, & stands in need of the assistance of his Country for support — [signed] CHARL HOOD
Charles Wood being duly sworn, on his Oath declares that he well knows the above named affiant Charles Hood & hath known him since the year 1780 & that they marched to Charleston together as soldiers in the Continental service in the Regiment above mentioned & that they were discharged at the same place & time in 1783 by Captain William Lytle & that he hath good reason to believe & doth believe all the matters of fact set forth in the affidavit of the said Hood hereunto annexed to be true. ~ Charles hisXmark Wood

Court of Common Pleas and quarter sessions May Term 1821. Being the Court of Record for the said County On the 27th May 1820 personally appeared in open Court Charles Hood (a man of Colour) aged 65 years resident in said County of Orange, who being first duly Sworn according to Law,
doth on his Oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary war as follows – That he served in
the first North Carolina Regiment in the Company commanded by Capt. Roads as will more fully appear by reference to his former declaration bearing date the 9th day of May 1818. & numbered 2062.
I Charles Hood do solemnly swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818. That I have not since that time by gift, sale or any manner disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within
the provisions of an Act of Congress entitled “An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service during the Revolutionary War”passed on the 18th March 1818, and that I have not nor any person for me in trust any property or securities, contracts or debts due
to me, no have I any income other that what is contained in the Schedule hereto annexed & by me subscribed –
Schedule of Charles Hoods property –
1 Sow & 6 pigs} not paid for – (nothing) –
1 Horse} Cost $35 and have paid towards him $15.
1 Pot – 2 Hoes – 1 pair chairs, Plough – 1 Axe
The said Charles Hood states that he is 65 years of age that he has a Wen on his Back of great size, that he is Sorely afflicted with the disease called the Asthma, under which he has laboured for 20 years, and that he is entirely unable to pursue his occupation of a farmer –
He further states that he has a wife aged about forty years & rather unhealthy –

We hereby certify that the property set forth in the above Schedule is of the value of $19.60 nineteen dollars & sixty cents
