Hi Karen, No I'm not related, but my research has brought me into contact with the work of Sayer. Here's a little background to whet your appitite! Geoffrey Robley Sayer wrote a very good and informative book about Hong Kong. Called "HOng kong 1862-1919" published by HK University Press. It was a sequal to"Hong Kong: Birth, Adolescence and Coming of Age". The Foreword of HK 1862-1919 says "When my father died in 1962 he left me the manuscript of a follow up to his book HOng Kong: Birth, Adolescence, and coming of age. The manuscript was entitled "Hong Kong 1862-1919: years of discretion" and has never been published. The work is not of great historical importance; indeed little of significance occured during the period to excite the interest of anyone outside Hong Kong. And it is only in comparatively recent years that the people of Hong Kong have shown much concern or appreciation of how this unique outpost evolved. It was because little, if anything, has been written of the period and I felt it workthwhie to pursue the idea of arranging the publication of a limited issue. I gratefuly acknowledge the assistance give to me by Professor Dafydd Evans who so wilingly undertook to edit the manuscript and to give valuable advice on how to proceed. I am indebted to the Hong Kong University Press for their help in the preparatory work and for agreeing to publish, at their risk!. G.M. Sayer HK 1974" G.R. Sayer facts born in 1887 educated at Highgate School London and at Oxford University. Arrived in HK as a cadet officer in 1910, was immediately sent to Canton to learn Chinese. In WW1 he was a Major with the Rifle Brigade. He married in 1919. Before WW1 he served as Secretary to the Governor (of HK) Sir Henry May. After WW1 and his return to HK he filled a number of posts and was Director of Education at the time he retired in 1938. the above extracted from HK 1862-1919 the editor's preface. If you want to know more, perhaps you should search the HK records archives website and write to the Royal Asiatic Society in HK - either Robert Neild who is President or Peter Stuckey who is Vice President, both of whom I have met and are very friendly and helpful people. Good luck! Liz Chater Notify Administrator about this message?
