Hong Kong to Swansea

My husband's grandfather came over from Hong Kong just before, or during, the Ist World War by merchant ship(I think) to Swansea, South Wales where he settled and married. Where do we start looking for records? Were proper records of births kept in Hong Kong at this time? What about ship's records?
