I've only figured out my Holzapfels back until about 1880, before that we think they were in Germany (at least in 1844 the oldest fellow I can trace was born there).
I'm checking different spellings, too. My great grandparents spelled their name HolzaPFel on everthing they wrote, but we found them on some of the census reports as HolzaPPel. Guess it depends on who was writing that day!
Haven't come across any Marys or Henry Shocks. And most of our folks seemed to hang out in Philadelphia - haven't found any that moved out of the area once they got there. Actually, my mom is probably the first one in our Holzapfel line to leave the state when she got married in 1946. All her Holzapfel cousins are still back in Philly.
