We here in northeast Tarrant County have a Civil War veterans monument in place, and are posting biographies and photographs of the men at our Genweb site. If you can add to the following biographical sketch, or could share any photos you might have of this veteran, his wife, or his home, we’d be happy to have them. Thanks for taking the time to read our query. Mike Patterson, Colleyville, Texas. Jasper N. Holt was a Confederate veteran who lived south of Big Bear Creek in Precinct 3 when the 1880 census was taken. Holt was born in October 11, 1839 in Tennessee to two native Tennesseans. Clues to his ancestry may be found in the fact that two of his neighbors here who also came from Tennessee, F. K. Daniel and I. T. Keller, both said they’d known him from boyhood there. Jasper was a soldier in Co. D, 23rd Tennessee Infantry. His official records in the National Archives say he enlisted on August 23, 1861 at Camp Trousdale, Tennessee, and is reported present on the last surviving regimental roll December 31, 1864. Jasper and his wife, Sarah J. “Sallie” Holt were married about 1867 in Tennessee. She was born in Tennessee, as were both her parents. A list of their children, compiled from census records, includes: James S. Holt (born June 1868); Louanna Holt (born about 1869); Albert Holt (born about 1870); George Holt (born about 1872); Elizabeth Holt (born about 1873); Mattie Holt (born about 1875); David Holt (born about 1878, the first one of the children to be born in Texas); and Cora M. Holt (born December 1882). KIDS HAVE DEATH CERTIFICATES When the 1880 census was taken, Jasper and his family lived in Precinct 3 of Tarrant County, south of Big Bear Creek. Judging from the names of his neighbors, he may have lived in the Euless area. Jasper’s wife, Sallie J. Holt, is buried at Johnson’s Station Cemetery in present-day Arlington. The dates showing on her stone are May 5, 1845 and May 22, 1894. By the time the 1900 census was taken, Jasper was living in Dan Precinct, Wise County, Texas, with the family of his son, James S. Holt. Jasper’s daughter, Cora M. Holt, was also living with them. Jasper N. Holt applied for a Confederate pension in 1904, while he was a resident of Room 31 of the Powell Building in Fort Worth. A notation on the outside of his folder says the pension bureau was notified of his death on November 3, 1926. He was sixty-four years old on October 11, 1903. He said he came to Tarrant County in 1875. He complained of rupture, rheumatism, and general debility. He said in his pension application that he enlisted July 1861 in Wartrace, Bedford County, Tennessee, and served until he was captured April 4, 1865 in Virginia with General Lee. He served in Co. D, 23rd Tennessee Infantry. His file contains an affidavit by F. K. Daniel, who said he’d known Holt since boyhood and served in the same company and regiment with him. It also has an affidavit by I. T. Keller, who said he’d known Jasper since childhood and served with him. He was a member of the Robert E. Lee Camp of United Confederate Veterans in Fort Worth. Holt has no Texas death certificate and no standing readable headstone in any northeast Tarrant County cemetery. Notify Administrator about this message?
