I saw this message from you after I answered your query to me.Please do me a favor...translate this into modern-day language for me.I can't seem to find my "Translating Old English for Dummies" book.
"This is to Let you know that I am so gwine away for my father is so fraid of the flucks and Will not Let me Stay any Longer..."In particular...FLUCKS!
I ran off a copy of the info you posted and will study it.
For the reasons I mentioned in my previous post to you about the Y-DNA results, if Nathaniel's father was a Thomas Holt in Southampton, that Thomas Holt would have to have a different Y-DNA than any of the Thomas Holt's there who descended from Randolph.
We do know one really helpful fact from the DNA results....no matter if Nathaniel's father was named Thomas or not, Nathaniel's father was part of a family who descended down a line of men from the immigrant, Robert Holt. I believe they were in MD for a few generations before moving to Essex Co, VA....at least some of them.
I have no preference for who Nathaniel's father was, and I have not come up with a possible father, let alone a probable one after all these years of searching. He was who he was, and I know we both are just after the true blood line.
One thing that's on our side also is Nathaniel wasn't a commonly used name by the Holts.
I don't know if you read it or not, but I had posted, more than once, my concern about John being a son of Abby and Nathaniel Holt or not.My reason for questioning it was because Nathaniel was the executor for a John Holt's will in 1810 in Sussex Co, VA.His son, John Holt Jr, declined from being the executor and Nathaniel took his place. That was not long before Nathaniel's 1814 death. That lead me to believe that the deceased John Holt Sr. was close to Nathaniel's death.I'm hoping that John Sr. was one of Nathaniel's Holt relatives and not Abby's.It lead me to believe that perhaps the John who is being called Nathaniel's son might actually have been John Holt Jr, s/o John Holt Sr, and Nathaniel might have taken him under his wing after the father's death.Perhaps John Sr. was Nathaniel's brother?
That is the same John Holt who had a slave named Jacob who Nathaniel petitioned the court in 1812 to grant a deed of Emancipation.Nathaniel did finalize Jacob's freedom in court in Feb, 1813.
The 2nd reason I had doubts that John was Nathaniel's son was because all of Nathaniel and Abby's children were Christened. Why wasn't John?Even if Nathaniel had to venture off for some reason, he could have had JohnChristened when he returned or even before he left.Christening their children obviously was important to them.
I know that Nathaniel Holt was the Godfather for one of the Stoke children.
Anyway, the tornado sirens are blasting...sorry to stop abruptly, but that's all for right now.
Karen
