Beth: I don't doubt that Owen Holmes's father was William Holmes, but I wonder where you got the info that Owen's mother was Rutha Springer of Union Co., SC. Rutha, sometimes known as Ruth, was my g-g-grandmother, who married Walter Holmes of Union Co. Several websites refer to him as William Walter or William W. I've researched land transaction, court, census, tax and church records in Union Co.; Barren Co., KY; Bedford Co., TN; and Morgan Co., AL & find no evidence that his name was William. The idea that he might have been William Walter originated with my distant cousin, the late B. R. Holmes, who speculated that he might be the same person as William, son of Isaac Holmes of Charleston. If B. R. had more resources, he would have known that William was a Charleston attorney who married Margaret Edwards. The birthdate you have for Rutha was actually the DOB of Margaret. Census data indicate Rutha actually was younger. Margaret died c. 1800; William, c. 1819. Their sons: William Henry, John Bee and James Fisher. Walter and Ruth's sons: Dennis, Isaac (my g-grandfather), John Walter, James. Not Owen. Walter is in the 1840 Morgan Co., AL, census. In the 1850 Blount Co. census, Ruth was living with daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth and James Drake. A marker was recently placed on their graves in Old Enon Cemetery in Morgan Co. just north of the Cullman Co. line, showing his name as William W. Someone fell for B.R.'s speculation. I won't challenge any valid evidence that I'm wrong. - Ted Holmes
