Hello Carolyn;
It has been a while since we exchanged messages, I have now found that a direct ancestor, Jochim "Jack" Schlotfeldt lived in Moline with the name "James". We have the census records for 1860. His wife at that time, however, was Marguerite Lage, who died in Davenport in 1889. I see also a person I believe to be "your" James Schlotfeldt on the next page, #567.Lines 31-35.
James age 45 from "Holstein", Mary, age 42; James age 11; Harry Limke (I think)age 11, born Holstein and Wm age 2 born "ILL". They lived close to our "James/Jack" but I still have not made the relationship. I do believe it has links with the Schlotfeldt/Einfeldt family there.
