Brian, the first thing, and most important one are the results from your markers which were tested. Probably the first thing that you should do is to go back to FamilyTreeDNA.com, sign in, and then go to the section which tells you of your matches. Those markers are the ones you want to post to YSearch.com--that's really easy--FamilyTree will provide an easy access to that site. The reason I suggest it is that people who have tested on other sites rather than FamilyTree are posted there too--you have a bigger chance of matching.
The confusion about Recent Ancestors and the other things is really confusing. It will take a while for you to sort that out, but it is not important.
Just remember, the 12 matches is not enough, so pay little attention to it--even true with 25. If you tested 37 markers you should concern yourself to 37/0, 37/1/37/2 or 3--the second figures--0, 1, 2, 3, represent the genetic distance between you and the other person. I think that 37 with a distance of 0,1,2, means that you are definetely related to that person. Don't worry about trying to figure out all of the gobblygook immediately, you have time to do that.
I haven't been contacted by FamilyTree, so I may not match with your. Hope that this helps you--let me know if you have any questions or are still confused. JH
