Descendants of Solomon Miles Holloway
Generation No. 1
1. Solomon Miles2 Holloway (George1) was born 1802 in Campbell County, Ga., and died 10 Nov 1856 in Carroll County, Ga.. He married Jeanne "Jane" Will Cash 27 Apr 1824 in Newton County, Georgia, daughter of James Cash and Mary Davis. She was born 02 Jan 1806 in Newton County, Ga., and died 23 Jul 1857 in Carroll (Campbell)l County, Ga..
Notes for Solomon Miles Holloway:
Can not find proof of this Miles Holloway's parents. Letter from Mrs Yvonne Allen.. An unsigned statement was found in an old letter box left by William Jasper Holloway, b. 28 Jan 1882, d. Aug 4, 1970. The finder believes the note was written by John James Robert Holloway, William Holloway's father. The statement was found on 14 April 1986. Geo.Holoway lived in Virginia in 1775 was of Scotch Irish descent. He came across the ocean about 1750. Note by Compiler - this is questionable. Solomon Miles Holloway, son of George, moved to Carroll County about 1837. He is found on the 1840 Carroll County, Ga. census.
The group sheet for Solomon Miles Holloway and Jane Cash Holloway was compiled from information supplied by their descendants, Courthouse Marriage and Deed records, as well as tax records. Church records were a tremendous help as well as census records. Family Bibles in possession of A.D.Chandler's descendants and W. W. Chandler's descendants (trying to find bible)
Both Miles Solomon and Jane died rather young (before their 52nd birthday). Cause of death unknown. It looks as if both Jane and Solomon were members of the Eden Primitive Baptist Church at the time of their deaths. This couple left several children under the age of 18 at their death. The youngest, age 9. The 1860 census shows one of the children living with his sister, Mrs. John Davis (Elizabeth).

On the 1850 census W. W. Chandler is living next door to Lucy's parents, Solomon Holloway. Only circumstantial evidence proves that Lucy is the daughter of Solomon Miles Holloway and Jane Cash.

William married Lucy, daughter of Miles Holloway and Jane Cash.
Susan shows that a daughter, named Margaret, was born after William's death in 1862. She shows date of 1863 only. Of course, Lucy could have been pregnant before William left for Winchester, Va. in the Civil War. Editor's note: I show a Margaret born in 1856. Were there two Margarets?
Lucy is found living in the house of her son-in-law Thomas Patterson on the 1900 Carroll Co., Ga. census. Her age is incorrect but the census states she was born in January.

Benjamin's first wife, Mary "Molly" died of thyphoid fever in 1884 in Cleburne, Co., Al. (Abernathy District). She left him with 4 children under the age of six.
James Benjamin's second wife Martha Ann Mobley is found here on the 1900 census with her mother, Annie Jane first married Joseph Chapel Mobley and then married an Owens (was widowed twice). James married six times. The third wife was Sally Wiggans (mar. 5/9/1914), the fourth wife was Louisana Strength (mar. 8/20/1921), the fifth wife was Sarah Alice Weathington Boatright (mar. bef.1928). Laura Ann Yarbrough Hall) sixth wife signed his death certificate. He had children by the first two wives only.
Information obtained June 30, 2003 in an interview with Cousin Estelle Boatright Messer, age 94 (a granddaughter of J. B. McClain) is as follows: She states that one of her grandfather's wives was her widowed Grandmother Boatright whose name was Sarah Alice Weathington She said that her grandfather McClain married sisters, but that she did not know their names. After the first sister died, he then married her older sister (90 years old and ailing) who was living with them because he could not live with her and take care of her without gossip. She had nobody to take care of her and no place to move to, so he married her. More research will have to be done to put the wives in the correct order of marriage. She stated that he was a smart, kind old man. He always had a garden and planted fruit and nut trees(as well as grape vines) every place he lived.
James Benjaman was the son of Josiah Marion McClain, b. 1840 DeKalb Co., Ga. and Julia Ann America King, b, 17 Mar. 1841, Carroll County, Ga. married 1857 in Carroll County, Ga.
In 1914 James, a farmer, was a registered voter in the Turkey Creek Dist. 1240, Carroll County, Ga. James fathered four children by his first wife and seven by his second wife and ended up marrying six times. He was widowed four times, divorced once, and left the last wife a widow. His first wife was Mary "Molly"Chandler (died), 2nd was Martha Ann Mobley (died), (proven). The dates of the other marriages not known for sure nor the order. 3rd, was Sally Wiggans (died)?, 4th was Louisanna Strength (died)?, fifth was Boatright lady (divorced), and sixth was Laura Jane Yarbrough.

"Our Smith/King Families" book by McBride, censuses and marriage records. No mention of more than the first two wives in this bible.
The following letter was written to John Reese of Utah in 1976 by Enoch Smith, Rt. 4, Box 155, Heflin, Ala. It seems John had asked for some church records and Enoch was researching for John. I cite this information because it definitely ties in our James Benjamin McClain to the McLain/McClains of Acworth, and Cobb County, Ga. Records of Harmony Primitive Baptist Church, Cleburne Co., Al (formerly Carroll Co): "James McClaine joined Nov. 28, 1879; Julia Ann McClain joined 1894; John Free joined Aug. 10, 1885; sister M. J. Free by acceptance of grace; receivied J. J. McClaine by letter; received brother J. H. McClain by acceptance of grace (baptized July 18, 1895). Brother J. B. McClaine served as a delegate to our sister church at (Mars Hill, Acworth, Ga. in 1896.
(Note: Jim's grandfather Josiah McLain and many other McLains are buried at this Mars Hill cemetery located in Cobb County between Acworth and Marietta.)
Dear Brother Reese sorry I have not found more on these names you requested information on but our old Records Book is in bad shape from 1860 to 1920. It has faded out until I just cannot read it............You might find more information at Poplar Springs Church in Carroll Co., Ga. that might be your best bet, so I will hush by asking you say pray for me and mine. My wife and myself has retired and we are 70 years old and enjoying life pretty good. Good night. My membership is at Harmony Church."
James B. McClain is found on the 1880 Cleburne Co., Al. census (Abernathy Dist.), NA Film 1254008, Film T9-0008, Page 190D as follows:
James B. McClain, age 22, b. Ga.
Mary F. G. McClain, wife, age 27, b. Ga
Laura J. E. McClain, dau. age 2, b. Ga.
Lucy A. A., dau. age 3 months, b. AL.
In the same area is Mary "Molly" Chandler McClain's sister Margaret who is married to Thomas J. Patison (or Patterson). Many of the Chandlers moved to Cleburne County, Al. before 1880.
Note: Life was very hard for my gr. granfather McClain. First, his father goes off to the Civil War then he deserts his first wife and four children. Both his grandfather Benjamin King and William Chandler died in the Civil War. The families had to struggle to survive. Neither of the grandfathers were wealthy. There are no records of them owning slaves. It is thought that Benjamin was a "tanner" as well as farmer. Records show they were religious people and attended church. Only one of every 10 families in the South owned slaves.
He married, and for a few years was happy it seems. The wife died leaving him with 4 small children to care for. Naturally, he found another wife as quickly as possible. By the second wife he had nine more children. These also probably were happy years; then the second wife died and he was left with minor children to raise again, but the older children evidently helped him. We do not know the dates of his other marriages.

Notes for Laura Jane Elizabeth McClain:
Laura Jane McClain met Hethy Elbert Clements when he came to work in Roopville, Ga. Roopville is located on a high ridge in the southern end of Carroll County. It is situated on the old McIntosh trail, also known as State Highway #5. The village contained several dwellings, three stores, a sawmill and a blacksmith shop. By 1893, Roopville had an additional general store, post office, drug store, shoe shop, gin sawmill, planing mill, grist and wheat mill, blacksmith shop, school, Baptist and Methodist Churches and a population of approximately 150. Roads had been built north and south, east and west. Located at the intersection of these roads, Roopville enjoyed early wagon trade. Just about everything that the residents needed was either produced on the farm or could be purchased in Roopville if one had the money.
By the early 1900's , Roopville was a thriving business community but Laura married Hethy in 1895 and they moved to Macon County, Alabama where his father and step-mother were living.
Laura returned to Carroll County to visit her relatives as often as she could. She had many relatives there. Her mother was the daughter of William Chandler who died in the Civil War at Winchester, Va. Her paternal grandmother was Julia Ann America King McClain whose father Benjamin King got sick in the Battle of Vicksburg and died in Mississippi. Both men enlisted from Carroll County. These families and Laura's ancestors the Holloways and Bursons are mentioned in the early church histories of Carroll County (Macedonia Primitive Baptist, Poplar Springs Primitive Baptist, Whooping Creek Primitive Baptist.

Notes for Solomon Galant Holloway:
Soloman, Lula and Ray moved to North Texas (Dallas area) in 1895. The following year they left the area on a wagon train headed south. Lula remembered Soloman selling her matching pair of horses and carriage to purchase oxen and wagon. They settled in Jackson County in a settlement called Red Bluff. They remembered the vast flat prairie and standing to watch the wagon train go on until they could no longer see it. This settlement was about 30 miles east of Victoria, and was later named Lolita. Deed records show they purchased 160 acres of land that was part of the two leagues of land originally granted to Steven F. Austin. The sum of $720 was the agreed price and was to be paid in 5 payments. Each to be paid on the first day of December 1896, 1897, 1898, 1899, and 1900. The first payment was $100, and each folowing of $155 with 8% interest annually.
Soloman was a lifetime member of the "Woodsmen Of The World". They worked the farm until 1920 or so and then moved north. First settling in Nixon, Texas. Next, moving to San Antonio for a while, and later around 1925 moving on to Center Point, Tx. where they bought a small farm of about 10 acres. The family operated a truck farm on this acreage and sold their vegetables locally and in San Antonio. My mother told me there were many mornings she would wake up to find a freshly washed pail of strawberries on the sink. A frequent gift from Solomon G.
