Becky, I don't have much on Theodore Henry Hollman. The family version has him b c 1835, but the church records have him in his 30's when he arrived here. Since his oldest son August was b in 1853, Theodore would have been only about 18 when his son was born. We don't know the port of entry, but Louisiana is a very good possibility.
There was a post card written from The Hague, Netherlands, in 1948, signed D. Homine. My grandmother said the family name was Hollman. (They could have changed it before the war to try and get out of Germany). This was supposedly the only correspondence between the two countries in many, many years, which leads me to suspect that most of the family was already in this country.
If your grandmother was Catholic, she probably belonged to St. Boniface Parrish, or later to St. Martin's Parrish. (I haven't gotten to St. Martin's yet. They only allow you to come on Thursdays, but I am going soon).
This is the best lead we've had in years. If you could send me your grandmothers married name that might help also.
I tried to look up Lahr Germany but couldn't find it.
Thank you for the information. If you come up with anything else please let me know, and I will do the same.
Thanks again,
Mary
