Good afternoon. I'm glad to hear you are interested in the DNA project. I am the Administrator of the Hollister Surname Y-DNA Project through Family Tree DNA. Please allow me to answer your questions. 1)There is one Hollister DNA project. This is through FamilyTreeDNA.com. I don't think there was a Hollister surname group on RelativeGenetics (another company)...this is the group that Ancestry.com just swallowed up. You can't beat FamilyTreeDNA for it's advertising and large database. 2)There are a few descendants of Lt. John Hollister that are part of the project. I cannot really discuss it in more detail as their information is private to the group. 3)The project exists for new members to submit DNA and potentially match with other members. It is then up to each member to contact one another and compare lineages for research. The only information made public is: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Hollister/ You can see Y-DNA results posted here without member information and can make some assumptions by what you see. Potential members should be aware...purchasing the DNA kit will not get you any information regarding your lineage from FamilyTreeDNA. It is those individuals you potentially match with who may be able to give you key information you are missing. 4)Yes, there are a wide variety of tests. To answer your question, a 37-marker test would be sufficient in determining if indeed the individual is connected to Lt. John. However, in order to better be able so say how closely they relate to others in the group, the highest 67-marker test is the way to go. You always have the option to upgrade later, but there is greater overall cost and you'll have to wait awhile to get the new results. Great news for you though...If you order before the end of the year (at least the 37 marker test), you can get a $30 discount. It is a discount through FamilyTreeDNA that I will process after I have seen that you've ordered a kit. There are only 2 discounts available per surname. If you are ready to order, here is the link: http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_det.aspx?group=Hollister&projecttype=S In reference to publicity of the Hollister project: As the group is still in its infancy there hasn't been a real drive to push one particular ancestor or another. While Y-DNA research's main goal varies from person to person, the project is here to allow for data comparison. Pushing one particular ancestor (i.e. "Find out if you are related to Lt. John Hollister by joining our group") is not sending the right message. Person A may receive a result back that says they are related to another Hollister branch and become discouraged. Person B may receive a result back and discover they have a completely different Y-DNA (for a different surname). Please let me know if you have any additional questions & thanks for your interest.
