Where do you find William and Clara in 1920? I doubt that they divorced as it is my understanding that in most places 90 years ago, the only grounds for divorce were insanity or adultery. However, a significant number of couples did live apart, partly for economic reasons and partly because of incompatibility. My grandfather worked in Washington DC, where he lived during the week and returned to his home in Maryland on weekends where his wife and children lived. If the Census had been taken during the week, he would have been listed as being apart from his family. Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward Angel chronicles life in a North Carolina family of that era in which the father was exiled to a rented room elsewhere in town when his wife became fed up with his drinking and divorce was unthinkable.
