I think the connection is a bit of a reach.
If you can find a female line (daughter, mother, grandmother, etc) that descends from this family, a DNA test would tell you whether there was Native American blood in the family.
Of course, it would not pinpoint the lineage any closer, but it would at least tell you whether you were on the right track.
