We have now tested over 150 male Hollingsworths and have found approximately 20 lines with the surname that have no close genetic links to one another. Curiously, the family seems to divide into two hemispheres, with genetic overlap between the American, Canadian, and Irish families on one hand, and the English and Australian ones on the other. In the U.S. we have found 4 major family lines: 1. The descendants of Valentine Hollingsworth of New Castle County, DE; 2. A family that probably traces its ancestry to John and Charles Hollingsworth of the Eastern Shore of Maryland; 3. A family that probably traces its ancestry to George Hollingsworth of Baltimore County, Maryland, and 4. A family that seems to have its origins in Tidewater Virginia. As for the Irish Hollingsworths, there seem to be two families there, Valentine's which is genetic kin to the ones in Counties Wexford and Wicklow; and a completely different clan who lived in County Down. The Hollingsworths in Nova Scotia descend from those in County Down. As far as the English family goes, the two major groupings are a family that usually spells the name Hollingworth and is generally found in northwestern England, and a family of Hollingsworths found in Lincolnshire, Hertfordshire and Essex In addition there are smaller groupings like the descendants of the family at Hollingworth Hall, who live in Derbyshire and Australia; a small family in the fens of Llincolnshire; a family in Suffolk, and another in Essex. And in addition to this there are both the U.S. and England who fall into the category of "none of the above" for one reason or another. Hope that this helps.
