Here in Nova Scotia many of the Halliday and Oliver people are black. The Oliver family is very distingued, including a prominent clergyman, an actor, and high-ranking civil servants. They came here in the late 1700's as servants (most were freed slaves by then) or shortly after 1800. They had many difficulties getting decent land to farm in NS, and were often segregated in communities well outside the major centres of white population. The only Dandridge I had ever heard of was Dorothy, the very striking black actress and singer who was in the 1954 film "Porgy and Bess" with Harry Belafonte. Sadly, she died a year or two later from some kind of food poisoning.
