The Third Crusade (1188-92) began. King Richard I of England (Cour de Lion, or Lion Heart) held William, The King of Scots in a vassalage position, and forced William to outfit 5,000 Scottish men at arms to join Richard’s army. The Scots serve under the command of David, Earl of Huntingdon, the younger brother of the King of Scots. It is reported that of the 5,000 Scots in the Third Crusade, 1,000 were from the Annandale Region (Corehead is situated at the headwaters of the Annan River), and most of those were Hollidays.
