Hi Barbara. It is quite possible our families do indeed connect! It depends on what you know about your Gideon.
We have been following a 'Holladay' family that came out of Duanesburgh and actually have some interesting facts on the family based on a bio we found for one Samuel W. Holladay, who died in 1915 San Fran, CA.It says that he was born 4/29/1823 in Duanesburgh and his father was Gideon Holladay.Would Gideon's wife happen to be Martha COON from Poughkeepsie? The bio says that Gideon had 13 children, one of whom was Samuel W. Holladay, who I think is your 3rd gr grandfather.I am hoping that some of the other children are the one's in my database and include my Robert (my 3rd gr grandfather so same generation as yours). The bio on Samuel says his father, Gideon, died in 1827 and in about 1841 Samuel and his mother moved to San Fran, CA during the Gold Rush.He eventually became a lawyer and married Georgiana ORD.It was this California connection that peaked my interest since I know some of my Holliday/Royal/Sanford family wound up there as well.
What I'm hoping is that we have the same Gideon and Samuel and whether we can prove that my Robert is your Samuel's brother. All I know about Robert is that he was born about 1796-1800 and married a "Rhoda" somewhere in NY or Ohio. Robert's daughter, Sarah, is my gg grandmother b. abt. 1846 and married into the Royal family in 1866 NYC but gave her birth place as Ohio.Since the bio says many of Samuel's siblings wound up in Ohio, I'm hoping one of them was my Robert.I do know that Robert eventually wound up in Poughkeepsie (Dutchess Co) and was last seen on the 1860 census in NY City. This is probably how his daughter, Sarah, (my gg grandmother) married into the Royal family and ultimately stayed in NYC and Brooklyn. At one point, Sarah says her parents were born in Mass. and you show your Gideon having come to NY from Tyringham, Mass so despite the fact Gideon wasn't her father, it is starting to make sense.I never pay too much mind to the census data since my experience with it has shown such mistakes. But Sarah clearly gives her birth place as Ohio later in life. She also says at one point her father was born in CANADA and I wonder if you know any connection to Canada with your Holliday's.We were always told we had a little French Canadian blood in us on this side of the family. You mention that Gideon's father is a "Walter" (a name that shows up in the Holliday/Gillens descendants of my family)and that he hailed from Mass but is it possible there is some Canadian connection there?
I would love to hear from you and whether the family I mentioned above is indeed your family. If so, do you have any information on your Samuel's siblings and do one of them include a Robert or Harrison? I followed Harrison Holliday b. abt. 1816-1817 who married a Mary Ostram in Hyde Park, Dutchess Co., NY.Feel free to email me if you wish.

Linda
