You ask a very good question.
The very earliest references to the Hollandsworth surname are mostly found in Cheshire, England, where the name was originally spelled Holinewurth. Some other early references to our family are found in Lancashire, Nottingham, York, and Suffolk. This led to the conclusion that there was one Hollingsworth/Hollingworth/Hollandsworth family we all belonged to.
However, DNA testing indicates that there are at least 6 families with no blood ties during the past 1000 years, hinting at multiple origins.
One family of Hollingworths originated in the area of Cheshire, Derby, and Nottingham almost a millenium ago.
Another family, spelling the name Hollingsworth, had settled in Hertfordshire by the mid-1600s.
Two other families had settled in northern Ireland by the late 1600s. These families presumably came from England but we can not presently verify that.
Two other families seem to trace their origins back to Hollinworths who came to America in the 1600s as indentured servants. Presumably both of these families came from England, but, again, we can not presently confirm that.
