Frederick F Holland - Civil War soldier / Ohio - Iowa

Does anyone know the family of this soldier?

FREDERICK F HOLLAND, born in Ohio, enlisted from Marshall County Iowa into the 14th Iowa Infantry, Company G in the fall of 1861.

During the siege of Fort Donelson in Tennessee the following February, the Union men encircling the fort were forced to sleep out on the ground two nights in the snow without winter clothing, tents or shelter when the weather suddenly went from unseasonably warm to freezing rain and snow.

They also slept in the freezing cold without any fires, which only drew Confederate snipers and cannonshot. Some men later described waking up (if they were actually able to sleep) with their clothes, and even hair, frozen to the ground. Many of the men came down with severe pneumonia, and others got their feet frostbitten so badly they could not walk. Riverboats took these casualties downriver to hospitals for treatment. Some recovered, some did not.

Frederick Holland was taken aboard the steamer Louisiana and brought to a military hospital in Cincinnati where he died March 27 1862, several weeks after the battle. He was buried nearby.

Here is his entry from the roster of Company G, 14th Iowa Infantry:

Holland, Frederick F. Age 27. Residence Marshall County, nativity Ohio. Enlisted October 9, 1861. Mustered November 2, 1861. Died April 1, 1862 Cincinnati Ohio. Buried in Spring Grove National Cemetery, Cincinnati Ohio. Lot 8, Grave 111.

Does anyone know this man's family? If he lingered in a hospital with pneumonia for weeks he would have had a chance to write to his family, who surely prayed and hoped for his recovery. Certainly when he died his final letters and perhaps his photograph would have then become treasured keepsakes to the family that mourned him.

Is he still remembered? Does anyone in the forum have knowledge of this soldier, or have a "missing" relative named Frederick F?

There is only one Holland family in Marshall County in the 1860 census, James 44 born Virginia and wife Nancy 46 born Ohio, and several children, none named Frederick F (who may have been a younger brother or cousin to James at age 27, rather than a son). James is listed as a Christian minister.

There are a couple Holland families in neighboring counties in 1860. In Story County, there is a farmer named George 54 from Ohio, and one named Benjamin 51 from Ohio in Powesheik County, an ME clergyman. Whether they are related to this soldier named Frederick is unknown.

In 1870 there is only one Holland family in Marshall County Iowa, the father is named Christian, he is from Prussia, his children from Illinois. There is no trace of James the minister from 1860

If you think you know this soldier please post your ideas.
