Dear John,
Thank you for responding to my request for information on my ancestors James Holdsworth and Jane Roodhouse. The similarities and discrepancies between your family tree and my reconstruction of my family tree are certainly intriguing. I would like to exchange information with you to get as close to the truth as possible. Some of my information is verified, and some is conjecture. I have birth certificates and marriage certificates (where available) for some of my direct ancestors, but because I don't have ready access to local records, I have also used online sources including Free BMD, the 1881 census, the 1901 census, and the IGI.
I am descended from James and Jane's daughter Jane Anne Holdsworth, born 24 June 1843 in Wakefield. (I have a copy of her birth certificate.) According to Jane Ann Holdsworth's birth certificate, her father James Holdsworth was a ironmonger. Jane Ann Holdsworth's mother is given on her birth certificate as Jane Holdsworth, formerly Roodhouse.
From the marriage certificate of James Holdsworth and Jane Roodhouse, I know that James Holdsworth's father was James Holdsworth, also an iron monger, and the Jane Roodhouse's father was Milner Roodhouse, a grocer. They were both living in Wakefield at the time of their marriage.
From the 1881 census, I know that James Holdsworth (the younger) was born in London ca 1813. I assume that his parents were James Holdsworth and Ellen Crossland, who married in Wakefield in 1808 (according to the IGI). I have no idea what they were doing in London, but James Holdsworth appears to have an older sister, Jane, baptised in London in 1811, and a younger brother John, baptised in Wakefield in 1815.
I don't have Jane Roodhouse's date of death, but she was still alive and living with her husband, James Holdsworth, and grandson, William James Baker, in Bell Street, Wakefield in 1881. Jane Roodhouse's parents were Milner Roodhouse and Ann Binns. She was baptised in Wakefield in 1813.
I have assumed that James Milner Roodhouse was a son of James Holdsworth and Jane Roodhouse, a grandson of Milner Roodhouse and Ann Binns, and a brother of my ancestor Jane Ann(e) Holdsworth, as this would explain the origin of his middle name. (I don't have a copy of James Milner Roodhouse's birth certificate however.)
Jane Ann(e) Holdsworth's husband was William James Baker. They married in Wakefield on 11 May 1865. (I have a copy of their marriage certificate.) William James Baker was an engineer, and the son of William Baker, a wine and spirit merchant in Wakefield. He later went into the family wine business.
I don't have Kate, Muriel or John Henry Holdsworth on my reconstructed family tree. I will send you printout of pieces of my family tree in separate messages using a Yahoo email address.
I hope that between us we will be able to iron out the discrepancies.

Carol Metcalf
