Biography and Notes:
Obed Andrews Jr., M.D. Buried:
We are declaring Subia Ann Holden
It is possible that: 1) Subia and Subia Ann were both Holden, 2) only one of them was a Holden 3) whatever maiden name, they are related, just because of the very unusual name(s): both are seen as both Zuba and Subia. (Obed is rare, but not unique, and is a completely separate name from Obadiah). To be very clear about this:
A.1. "that he left Zuba Andrews, his widow, residing in Venice" from the will written Dec 1844
A.2. "Subia, his wife - aged 64 years" from her tombstone (from the census and will, her age has to be 69) **
B.1. "1858 Andrews, Obed & Subia A(nn) to Lewis Lobdell 68 78 Gro 75 ¼A" from Tompkins Co
B.2. "Obed Andrews, Physician, 40 NY, Zuba 33 NY" from the 1860 Tompkins census
With the discovery of the Holdens in Groton, Tompkins County in 1850, taken together with the land transactions of 1851 and 1858 in the same Town of Groton, we are declaring Zuba instant to be Subia Ann Holden without explicit proof of this. (Perhaps the unspecified obituary cited by Betty Auten will provide some real proof). The mother-in-law of Zuba instant remains an open question. We must say, however, that with the discovery of Harvey Whipple (m. Serena) and Harvey Holden (below) to have also been born in Vermont, there is a strong suspician of yet another marriage of cousins! Do we need to look for a Holden to Lansing marriage?
For example, there was some reason Obed named a son Lansing, wasn't there? Furthermore, Harvey Whipple in 1880 states that his parents were born in Connecticut, which is an important distinction from Massachusettes in that it leads us back to Capt. James Andrews! (And yes, it's Harvey Holden and Harvey Whipple).
Let's make this very clear: we have traced our Andrews, Holden and Whipple back to Vermont.
US Census 1860 NY Onondaga, Syracuse, Ward 7, Image 79, Household 495:
Obed Andrews, Physician, 40 NY, Zuba [yes - weird???] 33, John L. 17, Jennie 15, Alicia? 13
Or .... did earlier Andrews researchers mix up the marriage of the father and son??? [no]
And then ............ Sharron Garrett discovered this posting of the 76th NY Roster at:
http://www.bpmlegal.com/76NY/roster-a.htmlhttp://www.bpmlegal.com/76NY/roster-a.html
ANDREWS, JOHN T.- Age, 18 years. Enlisted, October 10, 1861, at Groton, to serve three years; mustered in as private, Co. C, November 2, 1861; mustered out with company, November 8, 1864. Andrews was the single son of Obed and Subia Holden, and a printer, according to an obituary (per Betty Auten).
And then again ......... Marcia Cummings led us to the Tompkins County GenForum land trasactions ......... *
this is plainly Dr. Obed Jr. ........ does this tell us there are more Mosher connections than first thought?
1851 Andrews, O(bed) & J(subia) A. to Elisha Eldridge 57 308 Gro ¼A
1858 Andrews, Obed & Subia A(nn) to Lewis Lobdell 68 78 Gro 75 ¼A
...................... the plot thickens .................................................. Gro = Groton .............................
1858 Andrews, Subia A. to Mary W. Jones 66 451 Gro 75 ¼A
Not just Cayuga, but Venice - Not just Tompkins, but Groton:
1817 -Tompkins County is formed from portions of other counties and townships.
Groton was originally part of the Town of Locke and was called Division.
1818 -Settlers in the hollow of Division petitioned to have the settlement's name changed
to Groton. It Is suspected the reason this was because many of these early settlers were
from both Groton Conn. and Groton, Mass.
US Census 1850 NY Tompkins, Groton, Image 6, Household 41
Harvey Holden 45 Vermont, Amelia 36 Vermont (no children - Amelia too young to be mother of Subia Ann .... must presume Harvey and Hiram are her brothers ..... unless Amelia was a second marriage
..... Harvey and Hiram are found in 1860 ...... no cause for the 1858 transaction by Subia Ann herself)
US Census 1850 NY Cayuga, Venice, Image 42, Household 325
Hiram S. Holden 31 NY, Abby A. 24 NY, John 5, Daniel D. 3 and Mary at 7 months
(Hiram and Abby are then found in the Town of Lansing in the 1860 census! ***)
To wit: Looking for information on Jay W. Holden 1853-1910 b. Lansingville, Tompkins County, NY
s/o Hiram S. Holden and Abby Ann Baker. [Town of Lansing, Village of Lansingville]
......... Why did Hiram and Abbey move to Lansing? A distinct possibility ..................................
US Census 1840 NY, Tompkins, Lansing, Image 25, Line 2
John Holden 70-80 with male 15-20 and 30-30, with female 15-20 and 60-70
......... as might be expected ....... Were John and Betsy the parents of Harvey, Hiram, Betsy and Subia Ann?
US Census 1850 NY, Tompkins, Lansing, Image 11, Line 1
Betsy Holden 73 MA and just Betsy 30 Tompkins ........ perhaps not, Betsy would have been 50 in 1827 ........
Tompkins County GenWeb: ...... very strange, but that's what it sez ......................................... *
List of bodies removed from Main Street Grave Yard as per Page 329, Village of Groton, N.Y.
Minute Book containing minutes from June 11, 1860.
Andrews, Dwight son of Obed & S.A. Andrews d. Feb. 23, 1855 ae 8yr **
Andrews, Earl son of Obed and S.A. Andrews d. June 4, 1855 ae 5yr
Guess what we then belatedly find ................. this is what it clearly sez ..................................
1850 US Census, NY Tompkins Co, Village of Groton, Image 43, Household 346 .... yes, shows counties...
OBID ANDRUS 30 Cayuga, Subia A 25 Cayuga, John T. 7 Madison, Phebe J. 4 Cayuga, Mary A. 2 Tompkins, Dwight C. 1 Tompkins .................... (As Sharon stated, one can not trust the tombstones in the area) **
Tompkins County Lottery: Lansing, Gerrit (Ensign) - Ulysses, Lot 63, Enfield
(There is some still unknown reason Obed named a son Lansing)
* Tompkins County has a wonderful set of linked data and a powerful Search Engine, while Cayuga has a wonderful and complete set of early maps.

I am descended from John S to Hiram to Charles to Oliver to Dewayne (my father). I have quite a bit of information although I have never been able to figure out the parents of John s. Mark Holden was the Colorado connection. He committed suicide in Rifle CO, around Thanksgiving in 1891. I live in Colorado (my parents are in Lansing NY. I am in Sri Lanka for work so don't have all my data.
