ABINGDON, VA – Willard Wilson Holbrook, 89, passed away on
Tuesday, November 18, 2008.
He was born January 15, 1919, in Dwina, VA, a son of the
late George Holbrook and Mary Hall Holbrook and was the
last surviving member of his immediate family.
He was a former resident of Buchanan Co VA, before moving
to Abingdon in 1979. He was a retired coal miner and a
member of UMWA Local 7025 of Harman, VA.
Mr. Holbrook was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served
his country during World War II and was wounded in the
line of service, for which he received a Purple Heart. He
enjoyed reading, fishing and walking on trails. He was of
the Old Regular Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by
his sisters, Zeldo Holbrook, Etta Owens, and Golda Akers;
and brothers, Jess and Millard Holbrook.
Survivors include his loving wife, Helen Church Holbrook
of the home; sons, Jerry Matney and wife Mary of Big Rock,
VA, and Ray Holbrook and wife Tara of Matthews, NC;
daughters, Claudette Smith of Statesville, NC, and Pamela
Stiltner and husband Cecil of Vansant, VA; grandchildren,
Carter and Joseph Matney, Jonathan, Tyler and Casey
Holbrook, Jacob Eggers, Audrey Kirk and husband Terry,
Steven Epling and Jenna Stiltner; great-grandchildren,
Michael Matney, Hannah Epling and Dexter and Tabitha Kirk;
and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends may call at the Frost Funeral Home Chapel on
Thursday evening, November 20, 2008 at 5, with evening
services at 6 p.m.
Funeral services for Mr. Willard Holbrook will be
conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, November 21, 2008, in the
Frost Funeral Home Chapel, with Elders Jerry Matney, Anion
Cole, Jackie Church, Billie Campbell, Larry Hargett and
Brother William McClanahan officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens, with
military rites accorded by the Highlands Fellowship Honor
Guard.
Active pallbearers will be his grandsons, friends and
nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the members and his
friends of Little Freedom and Holston Church.
