William E. Holbert, 85

William Earl "Bill" Holbert, 85, of Tryon went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 18, 2004.

He was a native and lifelong resident of the Peniel community of Polk County. He was born Aug. 24, 1918, to the late William Jacob "Jake" Holbert and Maude Sue Pack Holbert. He was a member of the Peniel Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and church clerk and was a member of the Sunday school. He retired from the General Electric Co. in East Flat Rock. He was a community committeeman with the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for many years. He was anAir Force and Army veteran, serving in the 1940s. He was a longtime member of the Woodmen of the World and a Democrat.

He is survived by his wife, Vernie Sue Russell Holbert; three daughters, Brenda Holbert Champion and husband, Ronnie, and Kay Holbert McGrane and husband, Jim, of Peniel Road and Carolyn Holbert Bradley and husband, Garry, of Mill Spring; three sons, Barry Jacob Holbert and wife, Barbara, and Larry Kenneth Holbert and wife, Judy, of Peniel Road and Robert Lyle "Bob" Holbert and wife, Linda, of Floyd Blackwell Road; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Mildred Holbert Horne of Green Creek, Katherine Holbert Barnette of Duncan, S.C., and Shirley Holbert McEntyre and June Holbert Smisor of Peniel Road; and two brothers, Thaxton Holbert of Henderson Road and Raymond Holbert of Peniel Road.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son, William Dallas Holbert; a son, Earl Lindsey Holbert; a grandson, Doyle William Brown; three sisters, Ethel Holbert Cochran, Jeanette Holbert Freeman and Virgie Holbert Feagan; three infant sisters, Alice, Myrtle and Doris; and notable friends, Jim Johnson of Rutherfordton, Charles Hartsfield of Lake Wales, Fla., and Glenn Jolley of Peniel Road.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Peniel Baptist Church. The Revs. Steve Price, William C. Pate Jr. and Harold Smisor will officiate. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Petty Funeral Home in Landrum, S.C., and at other times will be at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Steps to Hope, Ward Street, P.O. Box 518, Columbus, N.C. 28722.
