Karen,
Well, its nice to see that at least a few Holbert,Halbert are still alive and researching. Yes, you are correct in saying that John was listed in many documents as a Halbert. I have several deed documents with him being a Halbert. I descend from his son, Benjamin, who was several times called a Halbert but later used the name Holbert.Joseph was his son and Horatio Seymour was his grandson. Matter of fact, not only was John called a Halbert but he was reffered to as a Holbut and Holbird. One of his sons migrated to Texas and that name, Holbird, continued with the family moving to OK, MO and AR.

I was with a group several years ago who was searching for John's ancestors. John and Sarah Steel Halbert migrated from Amherst County, VA down to Rutherford County, NC sometime in the 1790 after their marriage in 16 Jan 1792 in VA. The Steel family and the Stover family moved with them or sometime near their arrival. I also have deed copies of the Steel and Stover families in Rutherford County in that time period. We found the old Holbert cemetery in the area that is called Holberts Cove last year where I believe that John and his son Benjamin is buried.

Some researchers believe that John's father was Nicholas Halbert and Nicholas's father as Peter Halbert. A John was mentioned in Nicholas's will but no futher proof that he was our John. I do not have a copy of that will. It would be great if we could make a connection to the VA Halberts and beyond.
