John William Hockett/Hoggatt, IL, NC(?)

My g.g.grandfather, John William Hockett, seems to be lost in time. I have a reference that states he was from NC, and that "Hoggatt" was a variation of the spelling. He was born sometime around 1800 and married Ann Shaffer in 1831 in Fayette Co., IL. His name shows up in the 1840 Madison Co., IL census index. I was told that he died in Madison Co in 1847.
Also, there are confusing references on the LDS site that say Ann Shaffer married "Peter" Hockett in 1831. Yet LDS lists the parents of my g. grandmother, Rebecca Hockett, as JOHN and Ann. Does this make sense to anyone?? Could John have been a relative of the William Hockett/Hoggatt whose name I've seen mentioned in the forums?
